The Mukhopadhaya family is one of the most prominent families in the medical field in India. The family is known for producing medical pioneers who have dedicated their lives to providing the best medical treatment to the people of their country. Born in 1916 in Bangladesh, Dr. B.Mukhopadhaya was an influential figure in the field of orthopedics in India who was an excellent surgeon, an academician, a talent hunter, a philanthropist, a Vice President of the Medical Council of India, a Director of Health Services in Bihar, and the Chairman of ALIMCO. He was a highly accomplished orthopedic surgeon who was influential in founding the Indian Orthopaedic Association and establishing orthopedic and physiotherapy departments in Patna. He also received the Padma Bhushan and the Dr. B. C. Roy Award. Mukhopadhya’s son, Dr. John Mukhopadhya, subconsciously followed in his father’s footsteps to become an expert in orthopedic surgery, which is still very new in the east region of India. In Pondicherry, he studied medicine at the Jawaharlal Medical Research Institute (JIPMA). Even though his other two siblings excelled in entirely different fields, Dr. John was determined to continue his father’s lineage of service and revolutionary work in the field of orthopedic surgery in India. An emphasis on excellence runs in the Mukhopadhaya family’s genes, and the surname is a tribute to years of brilliant work and dedication toward the development of orthopedics in India. Similarly to his father, Dr. John also did his fellowship in England, earning the FRCS in 1988. Later, he returned to England to complete his MCHC and MCH degrees. Despite being established in the UK, he was adamant about returning to India and practicing. Unlike England, where he did not believe he would make a big impact, India was where he believed he could make a huge impact. After returning to India, he began working in a Patna nursing home alongside his father. The two of them were passionate about learning all about the latest developments in orthopedic surgery. Similarly to his father, Dr. B Mukhopadhyay, who was known for his generosity in medicine and vanity, Dr. John too believed that engaging in the economics of his field would destroy the essence and reason of his profession, which is to assist people in distress without corruption through his service. The exposure Dr. John has to the northeast part of India goes back to the time when his father would visit Assam to check on the patients. As most of his patients came from northeastern India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, word spread about his treatment. As a Diplomate of National Board in Orthopaedics, he also taught. Additionally, he wanted to follow up on his patients about their journey after surgery and the long-term effects of it, as well as how they were doing. Since most of his patients resided in the northeastern region, he traveled back and forth between Guwahati and them to let them know he was in town. This marks the beginning of his Assam journey through Pratiksha Hospital.
